Sessions that include both partners in a relationship, though occasional individual sessions can also be helpful. Couples therapy provides opportunities to improve communication, work through problems, reduce resentment, and increase relationship satisfaction. I am a Prepare/Enrich facilitator and I enjoy working with couples to start or renew connection, move through gridlock and build healthy communication. My aim is to bring practical skills that help inside and outside of therapy so couples can experience the kind of relationship they desire. Trained as a family systems therapist, I keep patterns of interaction in mind as I work with couples. I strive to focus on the relationship as my client, preferring to see individual issues as, at least partially, outgrowths of the problematic interactions. When individual issues are addressed, I seek to address these in a way that strengthens the relationship by validating both perspectives equally. Using Imago Relationship Therapy, I cultivate a safe environment where conflict is transformed into an opportunity to grow and heal. The goal of IRT is to allow couples to understand each other's feelings, childhood trauma, and wounds on a more empathetic level. We identify unhelpful communication patterns that leave underlying needs unmet, then I challenge couples to practice positive connection inside and outside of therapy. Common couple challenges include problematic secretive behaviors, frequent conflict, sexual problems, difficulty with each other's emotions, healing from past hurts, parenting, and dealing with extended family.
